Cleaning and disinfection are an essential part of any biosecurity program. Follow this 10 STEP program to achieve a healthy environment in the poultry house and minimize performance challenges.
STEP 1 – START WITH A PLAN
Any good program starts with a plan. Set dates and times and establish equipment and products needed.
STEP 2 – CONTROL INSECTS
Spray the house interior with a locally recommended insecticide as soon as the flock is removed. Complete a second treatment with insecticide before fumigation.
STEP 3 – REMOVE DUST
Remove all dust from interior surfaces and equipment.
STEP 4 – REMOVE EQUIPMENT
Remove all equipment from the house and raise automatic feeders and drinkers
STEP 5 – PRE-SPRAY
Spray detergent solution to wet throughout the house. This helps to dampen any remaining dust.
Always remember to wear appropriate protective clothing.
STEP 6 – REMOVE AND DISPOSE OF LITTER
Remove litter offsite and dispose of it in the correct manner, or according to government regulations.
STEP 7 – WASH
Use a pressure washer with a foam detergent. Foaming detergents help to minimize aerosol spread of disease. Confirm that the detergent is compatible with the disinfectant that is being used. Rinse with water.
STEP 8 – CLEAN WATER AND FEEDING SYSTEMS
Water systems: Drain, wash and disinfect the water system. Clean water pipes at least once per flock to descale and remove any biofilm build up. If not possible to physically clean, use high levels of chlorine. Flush water lines with clean water prior to flock placement.
Feeding equipment: Empty, wash and disinfect all feeding equipment. Empty bulk bins and connecting pipes and brush out.
STEP 9 – DISINFECT
Use a disinfectant that is approved and effective against specific poultry bacteria and viruses.
Note that disinfectants are ineffective in the presence of dirt and organic matter, and when applied to wet surfaces, it will result in dilution and therefore be ineffective.
STEP 10 – CLEAN EXTERNAL AREAS
Clean and disinfect external areas, especially areas under the ventilator and extractor fans, access routes, gutters and under feed bins.
