The Northern Branch of the South African Society of Animal Science hosted its inaugural Student Industry Day on 9 April 2026. Guided by the theme #BePrepared, Urban Farmer, together with industry colleagues, had the privilege of engaging with more than 230 animal science students who will be entering the workforce in the coming years. 

Each participating company had the opportunity to introduce their organisation and highlight the various career paths available within the industry. The students’ eagerness to engage and better understand where they might fit post-graduation left the Urban Farmer team confident about the future of the sector. 

In addition to the insightful discussions, the Urban Farmer team added a fun element to the day with an “African Continent Dart Board.” Students were invited to throw a dart, identify the country they landed on, and guess whether Urban Farmer currently services that country through its Macro Solution. With operations spanning 20 African countries, “yes” was, more often than not, the correct answer. 

Given the strong interest shown, Urban Farmer will be hosting an online Career Day on 30 June. This will provide a further opportunity to explore career options in more depth and offer insight into the day-to-day life of an animal scientist in the industry.
